Minutes of 4.25.15 SBPOA Membership Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 10:08am. In attendance were 4 SBPOA board members  – James Saftich, Diana Cowell, Andrea Lapinski, and Sandi Roberts – and 25 other property owners.

The minutes of 11.15.14 membership meeting were read and approved.

Neighborhood Watch Update – Diana Cowell announced that:

·        Lora Caputo is willing to take over as NW chair person;

·        There is a need for a NW captain to replace Bob Johannson;

·        A grant written by Chief Crowson provided sweatshirts for walkers this year;

·        Frozen pipes were the biggest issue this winter;

·        The spring volunteer luncheon will be at Catch 54 on 5/2 – 55 people are scheduled to attend.

Diana thanked the SB police department for their cooperation in turning off water at the street when running water was noticed by walkers. The entire group present thanked Diana for her hard work over the past two years on the Neighborhood Watch program.

Budget Update – James announced that there will be no cost to prepare SBPOA’s 2014 income tax returns. According to Brian Roberts, CPA, “I am doing the taxes at no cost to the association, as Beach Pilates and Wellness has covered the bill as a donation to the community.” Brian’s wife, Kelly Roberts, is the owner of Beach Pilates and Wellness, located on Rt. 1 next to the Subway.

South Bethany apparel – James mentioned options he is exploring:

·        Having a contest to create a new logo/design for t-shirts;

·        Purchasing shirts locally in various sizes and asking McCabes to sell them as we have in the past versus designing a shirt via an online company like customink.com so people can order what they want, in the color and size they want, when they want.

James will send out a survey to get input.

Historical Society - Maria Johannson mentioned several upcoming events:

·        Everyone is invited to tour the upcoming Coastal Towns Museum located at West Ave. and Oak St. in Ocean View ( across the street from the old Ocean View Town Hall). We are going to carpool from S.B. Town Hall on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 , leaving at 10:30 AM and going on the FREE tour at 11:00 AM.

·        All are invited and welcome to Michael Morgan's FREE presentation on Thursday, May21, 2015 -7:00 PM at the South Coastal Library, 43 Kent Ave., Bethany Beach. The topic is "The Delmarva Coast During World War II"

·        On  Tuesday, June 16, 2015 ( 10-12 noon)  Dr. George Junkin, Treasurer of the South Bethany Historical Society will do a Presentation at the Osher Lifelong Learning Center, University of Delaware, Lewes. This will be held at Fred Thomas Building , 520 Dupont Blvd. Lewes.  The topic is an overview of the history of the Historical Society as well as an Exposition of the current programs and topics.

Nominating Committee - James announced that SBPOA has a vacancy on the board for a President. There were no volunteers in the audience to be on a nominating committee. Andrea Lapinski will send something via Constant Contact requesting volunteers.

Presentations by Town Council Candidates – James announced that there are 6 candidates for the 3 open positions on the Town Council. Prior to today’s meeting, James extended an invitation to each of them to attend the meeting for a “meet & greet.”

·        Elizabeth Baker – was not able to attend;

·        Wayne Schrader –was not able to attend but sent a bio which James read to the group;

·        Don Boteler, Joel Danshes, Carol Stevenson, & Frank Weisgerber gave brief presentations summarizing their personal background and explaining why they are interested in running for Town Council.

The presentations were followed by a question-answer session. Bios for the candidates are available on SB website & will also be included in an upcoming town news release and in the local papers.

New Business - Ed Nazarian asked about creating a new SB telephone directory. James said it would be very easy to create an electronic telephone directory; we would only need to get permission from property owners to include their names and telephone numbers and then the master database could be used to create a directory. Ed said he would be willing to help with advertising but no one in the audience volunteered to chair a committee to create a new directory in paper format.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:11am.
